The end of Japan’s colonialism in Indonesia

The end of Japan’s colonialism in Indonesia was marked by the surrender of Japan after the Western Allies dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 and Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. It was followed by the decision to surrender on 10 August 1945 and the formal surrender of the Empire of Japan on USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay, 2 September 1945.

Japan formerly pledged to Indonesian independence by inviting political leaders, namely Soekarno, Hatta, and Radjiman, to Saigon, Vietnam under the commands of Terauchi Hisaichi (commander of Japan’s force in Indonesia). However, the surrender of Japan was confirmed on 15 August 1945, leading to a change in Indonesian political dynamics. Indonesia proclaimed its independence on 17 August 1945.
