Propaganda through Media:
Djawa Baroe and Nippon Eiga Sha

Djawa Baroe was a propaganda magazine published by Djawa Shinbun Sha, a Japanese newspaper backed by the Japanese government, in cooperation with Asia Raja. The first edition was published on 1 January 1943 and lasted until August 1945, before Japan surrendered in World War II.

Nippon Eiga Sha (日本映画社) was a filmmaking company under Sendenbu (宣伝部 or Propaganda Department) with a mission to spread political propaganda to unify Asia. It was formed in April 1943 by the Japanese government in Jakarta.

The Japanese government utilized these mass media to indoctrinate, manipulate and control people, resources, and their domestic spaces. The propaganda claimed that the struggle to increase food productivity and other needs was a “joint struggle” for both Indonesia and Japan. In reality, it was another form of exploitation.
