Japonica and Indica Rice

When they arrived in Taiwan in 1895, the Japanese brought Japonica, a short-grained and starchy rice variety widely consumed in Japan, Korea, and northern China. They intended to cultivate Japonica for their home market as part of the official policy to offset a decrease in rice production due to industrialization and rising prices following Japan’s war with Russia. Unfortunately, Japonica did not respond well to Taiwan’s subtropical climate and long hours of sunlight. Thus began the effort to develop new rice varieties for Japanese consumers.
